Skate 4 is free-to-play

Skate 4 (or simply “skate,” if you like) will be a live service, free-to-play game that will debut on PC, PlayStation, and Xbox platforms with cross-play and cross-progression. This was announced by EA.

The information was released as part of a new development stream, in which the developers reaffirm that the game is “not pay to win” and that “no map portions hidden behind [a] paywall,” “no paid loot boxes,” and “no paid gameplay advantages” will be present. In an effort to give gamers who don’t want to spend money a nice experience, they say that the game draws inspiration for its monetization approach from games like Apex Legends.

Additionally, the developers claim that this is “not Skate 4.” That is to say, it is not a straight sequel, nor is it a remake or remaster. There are no plans for solo sequels because the developer wants to keep improving this game. The setting is San Vansterdam, a brand-new city that is sort of regarded as a sister city to the San Vanelona of the earlier games.

Cross-play and cross-progression between old- and new-generation consoles, as well as PC, are features of the new Skate. The cross-platform options will also be supported by a mobile version that is currently in development.

Expect it to be a while because the game’s current release date is “when it’s ready.” Though the developers note that not everyone will be able to receive access right now, playtest sign-ups are currently open, and many gamers will be able to participate this summer.

However, the developers are hoping you won’t download the Skate 4 playtest that was cracked.
